Week of Oct. 7

Book Character Day Parade!  Thursday, Oct. 31.  Have your child dress as a favorite character.  First thing in the morning, we’ll all parade around the playground.  Wait for us outside and you’ll see us!  Don’t forget to send the book. We’ll share with the class and get to read them during reading workshop.  (no scary costumes or weapons…)

In Language Arts this week, we will…
·        Sketch rather than draw during writing so that we’ll have plenty of time to write words
·        Write stories that have a beginning, middle and end
·        Write words we “just know” be using word wall and spelling dictionaries
·        Use different strategies while reading
·        Focus and get our minds ready to read
·        predict
·        Practice reading high frequency words
·        Begin our word sorts to learn word patterns and help our spelling
·        Build our vocabulary with a weekly read-aloud. We will be introduced to 3 new words.  All week, we’ll keep track of when we use them in our writing, speaking, or see them in our reading.  The new words will be posted so that we will have a reference for future use.
·        Read word family poems to reinforce the patterns that many words have
In Math, we will…
·        Make tally marks to represent numbers
·        Collect and sort data to create a graph
·        Make groups of tens and ones
·        Continue to solve our problems of the day.  We use “CUBES” strategies.  (Circle the numbers, Underline key words, Box the question, Ex out extra information, and Show our work)
·        Visit our math stations. Each station will have a math activity that reinforces concepts that we are currently learning or have previously learned. Your child will also be able to visit “First in Math” at some point this week.
