Week of October 31st

Storybook Character Day is Monday, October 31^st.  Your child will need a book that goes along with his/her costume. No scary costumes or weapons, please. Make sure you have read the book to/with your child.  We will have a parade that you are invited to attend. (first thing in the morning) Then we’ll come back to the class and have presentations.  The children will introduce themselves, tell what they are dressed as, and share their favorite part of their book.

This week…

In Math, we will:

·        Identify numbers as odd or even

·        Represent numbers using tallies and read tallies

·        continue to problem-solve daily with our “Problem of the Day”

·        Begin our “BUILD” math stations… After our main math lesson, children will participate in group math stations that reinforce concepts previously taught.  The children are looking forward to it!

In Language Arts, we will:

·        Use different resources to make sure common words are spelled correctly

·        Increase our productivity by trying to begin and end a new story in one writing session

·        Remember that we’re writing for a friend and will aim to make our writing readable

·        work on retelling stories

·        sort words according to their spelling pattern

·        read word family poems and discuss the rhyming words

·        learn about compound words

Social Studies- We will be learning about authority figures in the home, school and community.

Red Ribbon Week is this week!   Let’s all have fun and celebrate good choices!

Monday – Hat Day

Tuesday – Red Day- wear red!

Wednesday – Wear OUES shirt if you have one… (picture day for retakes)

Thursday – Boots Day

Friday – Dragon Shirt Day!

We are so excited!  We were just informed that our first grade team was selected to receive a grant from The Carroll Education Foundation!  Our Rockin’ and Rollin’ Mathematicians grant will enhance our math lessons so much! We will receive $1,659.74 to purchase our items… 

This week…

In Math, we will:

·        Create sets of tens and ones to represent whole numbers. We’ll use beans and popcorn to make groups of ten and ones.  We have several activities to reinforce and practice this concept: “Fill the Containers”, “Find Someone Who”, shoulder buddy practice with number cards and more!

·        continue to problem-solve daily with our “Problem of the Day”

·        begin to learn about our “BUILD” math stations… After our main math lesson, children will participate in group math stations that reinforce concepts previously taught.  This will be lots of fun!

In Language Arts, we will:

·        focus on whether or not our stories can be read.

·        stretch and write words that we are unsure of spelling.

·        use a finger-sized space between words.

·        work on spelling sight words correctly.

·        work on improving our fluency and expression.

·        sort words according to their spelling pattern

·        read word family poems and discuss the rhyming words

·        learn about verbs.

Science- We will be finishing our plant unit and beginning to learn about rocks.  We will investigate and learn about the properties of rocks.
