Week of Sept. 2

We hope you had a great long weekend!  We are ready to dive into full days!  The kiddos are so excited about recess and lunch!  Here we go!

  • ·         Water bottles with pop tops only
  • ·         Lunch begins at 11:10
  • ·         If you have “class store donations” (think happy meal toys, etc), feel free to clean out those junk drawers and send them to your class
  • ·         This week is CEF “Change Week” (Carroll Education Foundation) CEF is an amazing organization that gives grants to Carroll teachers.  The grants pay for some great educational items and programs in your children’s classes. The first grade team has been awarded several different grants.  We will be collecting change all week.  All the money collected will go back to Old Union!  There are also some fun ways to celebrate… 

§  Tues- “Dragons Rule!” (wear a crown)
§  Wed- “Dragons Dream Big!” (wear PJs)
§  Thurs-“Dragons are Unique” (wear crazy socks and/or hair)
§  Fri- “Dragons have spirit” (wear green)
o   Saturday, Sept. 7 is the 17th annual Culinary Celebration at Hilton Southlake Town Square. Go to www.southlakecef.org


In Language Arts this week, we will…
  • ·        Sort rhyming words to prepare for our spelling that will be coming up the 2nd six weeks
  • ·        Begin writers’ workshop. (carrying on independently as writers)
  • ·        Begin reading workshop (discuss and practice expectations)(What does real and fake reading look like?)
  • ·        Read word family poems to reinforce the patterns that many words have

In Math, we will…
·        Count and graph the number of pockets we have.  Your kids might want to check for pockets as they dress.  J
·        Graph the number of letters we have in our names.
·        Play “Where’s the Penny” (a game that addresses number order)
In Social Studies, we will discuss being a good citizen.
