Week of April 29
Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast!
May 1st in the Library (Wed.)
8:00am - 9:15am
Join us if you can!  The teachers and staff would like to say thank you for all of your help!

The Family Night will be held May 8th at McDonald's on Kimball.  First Grade Teachers will be there from 4:00 to 5:00. Come join us if you can!
This year Talent Days will be May 20-23 (date has changed). Each class will have their own Talent Day during their normal music time. The entire grade level will meet in the gym to be a part of the audience each day. After the performances are over, Art, Music and PE classes will resume.
In Language Arts this week, we will…
·       Reread poems and fix spelling as needed
·       Celebrate our poems!
·       Reflect and interpret important information in stories
·       Discuss the author’s message
·       Continue prepositions
·       Sort words according to spelling patterns
·       Read word family poems to reinforce the patterns that many words have
·       With our “Daily Language Review”, we will edit/correct sentences and explore many language arts concepts
In Math, we will…
·       Measure temperature
·       Measure with dog biscuits
·       Begin learning about time
·       Problem solve using SSM, SWA, and BSD plans
·      Participate in our math stations! 
In Science, we will learn about forces of motion.

Week of April 22
Do you know what this is?  It’s a “nest” of baby praying mantisses!  Each first grade class has one.  We are watching and waiting for their arrival.  Stay tuned!
Our field trip will be April 24th!  We will be visiting Fort Worth Museum of Science and Nature. 
This Monday, the 22nd is Earth Day!  The whole school will celebrate it by releasing ladybugs!  Each child will have one to return to nature.  Did you know that ladybugs are helpful to the environment?

·       Read word family poems to reinforce the patterns that many words have
·       With our “Daily Language Review”, we will edit/correct sentences and explore many language arts concepts
In Math, we will…
·       Estimate and measure capacity using nonstandard units
·       Measure area
·       Choose our own nonstandard unit of measurement and measure a variety of objects
·       Problem solve using SSM, SWA, and BSD plans
·      Participate in our math stations! 
In Science, we will learn about Earth Day and Arbor Day!

Week of April 15
Our field trip will be April 24th!  We will be visiting Fort Worth Museum of Science and Nature. 
Join first grade on April 17 at Central Market!  A portion of the sales will go to Old Union!  Your first grade teachers will be there from 4:00 to 5:00.  Meet us at the café.
Please return your child’s “Art to Remember” envelope.  If you want the enclosed magnet, make sure to pay $5.

In Math, we will…
·       Guess and weigh objects using scales and cubes
·       Estimate and measure capacity using nonstandard units
·       Measure our feet with a variety of nonstandard units
·       Problem solve using SSM, SWA, and BSD plans
·      Participate in our math stations! 
In Social Studies, we will learn that legends reflect our culture.

Week of April 8
We enjoyed a visit from storyteller D.C. Cornish last week.  He was so entertaining!

In Science we will be researching a forest animal of our choice.  We will also be creating PowerPoint presentations in computer lab!
