Week of April 2
No School Friday the 6th (teacher work day) or Monday the 9th.  Happy Easter!

3 Piggy Opera
April 26 – 6:00 pm &
April 27 – 8:45 am
First Grade students are currently preparing for their performance
“3 Piggy Opera.” Please mark your calendars for this wonderful event!  The performance will include songs, acting and narration.
This project is a combined effort with the First Grade teachers as
well as the Encore teachers. Students will experience crosscurricular learning in art, music and library.
VOLUNTEER PROJECTS
We need parents too! Volunteers will be needed to assist with the
stage decoration (creating a backdrop and decorating the pig houses) as well as hanging art work and other projects to make the performance run smoothly. Please e-mail Mrs. McArthur (angelia.mcarthur@southlakecarroll.edu) if you are available.

This week…
In Math, we will:
·        Begin our measurement unit
·        Compare and order objects according to length
·        Measure items using nonstandard units of measurement (such as cubes and paperclips)
·        Measure length with penny rulers (use pennies as the unit of measurement)
·        continue to problem-solve daily with our “Problem of the Day”
·       enjoy our “BUILD” math stations. These stations help to extend and review the concepts the children have been learning all year.
In Language Arts, we will:
·        finish our poetry unit and celebrate
·        learn about different nonfiction features
·        learn about adverbs and how to use them
·        practice using the correct punctuation with different kinds of sentences
·        read word family poems and discuss the rhyming words
·        read poetry to build fluency
Social Studies- We will be writing our own autobiographies as well as completing activities similar to the biography ones- only about ourselves!  J

Tuesday and Wednesday of this week is STAAR testing for 4 th grade.  No visitors  please.  (This goes for lunch as well.)  Thank you!

·        play “Cover a Flat” to reinforce place value concepts
·        represent numbers using place value models
·        order numbers using place value
·        continue to problem-solve daily with our “Problem of the Day”
·       enjoy our “BUILD” math stations. These stations help to extend and review the concepts the children have been learning all year.
In Language Arts, we will:
·        learn that poets convey strong feelings
·        experiment using poetic language
·        learn that poets use patterns
·        learn that poets write about feelings in new ways- and often do so by using comparisons
·        practice alphabetizing words and use dictionaries
·        practice using the correct punctuation with different kinds of sentences
·        read word family poems and discuss the rhyming words
·        read poetry to build fluency
Social Studies- We will continue our biography unit.  The children are researching the life of a famous historical figure.  To gain information, the children have been reading books as well as visiting some wonderful online encyclopedias and databases.
