Week of Sept. 30

In Language Arts this week, we will…
·        Write small moments
·        Write with a partner
·        Discuss reading strategies such as: go back and read it again- a favorite!
·        Skip it and go on (reading strategy)
·        Find little words in big words
·        Use our schema while we read (what we already know about something)
·        Build our vocabulary with a weekly read-aloud. We will be introduced to 3 new words.  All week, we’ll keep track of when we use them in our writing, speaking, or see them in our reading.  The new words will be posted so that we will have a reference for future use.
·        Read word family poems to reinforce the patterns that many words have
In Math, we will…
·        Solve a logic problem
·        Graph in a variety of ways
·        Collect and sort data
·        Conduct surveys
·        Continue to solve our problems of the day.  We use “CUBES” strategies.  (Circle the numbers, Underline key words, Box the question, Ex out extra information, and Show our work)
·        Visit our math stations. Each station will have a math activity that reinforces concepts that we are currently learning or have previously learned. Your child will also be able to visit “First in Math” at some point this week.

In Science, we’ll learn about our senses.

Week of Sept. 23

This week is Book Fair!  We will preview the books and bring home “wish lists.” If you’d like to purchase books, you’re welcome to send money with your child OR come during our lunch/recess time and shop with your child. It will be open on Thursday until 5:30 as well.

This Friday is the end of the 1st reporting period.  Don’t forget to have your child turn in his/her reading log. “Reach for the Stars”…  The children will be rewarded with class store money!

For hygiene purposes, please send a set of headphones in a baggy labeled with your child’s name if you have not.  We are starting computer lab!

·        Write stories that span 3 pages
·        Check out home readers
·        Read with a “library” voice
·        Write in range of genres
·        Discuss different reading strategies (looking for beginning sounds, same spelling patterns)
·        Read word family poems to reinforce the patterns that many words have
In Math, we will…
·        Compare numbers and describe if the numbers will grow or shrink
·        Create new numbers by adding or taking away
·        Find the area of our feet
·        Practice counting by 2 as we draw the number of feet in our family
·        Begin our math stations.

In Social Studies, we will learn about using maps.

Week of Sept. 9

Don’t forget!  Curriculum Night is Thursday from 6:15 to 7:15.  This is the best time to learn all about what your first grader will be doing this year.  This event is for parents.  Hope to see you there!

·        Use spelling dictionary, word wall and other resources
·        Read word family poems to reinforce the patterns that many words have
In Math, we will…
·        Match number words and numerals
·        Compare numbers using greater than, less than and equal
·        Compare and order numbers
·        Begin our problems of the day

In Social Studies, we will learn about community helpers and authority figures.
