Week of January 2^nd  

For spelling this week (and the following 2 weeks), we will be working on high frequency writing words. These are words that first graders need to spell correctly while writing… A copy of “Spelling Tic Tac Toe” and the list has been sent home (stapled to the back of the graded contraction sort).  Don’t forget to turn in homework on or before Friday.  Thank you!

This week…

In Math, we will:

·        Name parts of a whole

·        Describe whole objects or sets using non-unit fractions

·        Skip count with “Caterpillar Counting” activity

·        continue to problem-solve daily with our “Problem of the Day”

·       enjoy our “BUILD” math stations…

In Language Arts, we will:

·        begin “All About” books

·        predict the end of stories

·        read poetry with partners to build fluency

·        read word family poems and discuss the rhyming words

·        work with contractions

·        practice capitalization and punctuation within paragraphs

Science- We will be learning about the life cycle of a penguin!

Week of December 12^th  

Our Holiday Sing-Along is December 15^th at 9:30am.  You’re welcome to join us!

If your child does not know how to tie shoes, NOW is the time to learn!  Please teach your child over the holidays…  We will all thank you!

For spelling this week, we are working on MATCHING contractions with the words they stand for.  Your child will not be responsible for the actual spelling of the contraction at this time.  There will also be NO homework due this week.  The children will be matching in class on Thursday, and this will count as their test.  Thank you!

NO home readers will be sent home this week.  Please enjoy books from home.

We will return to school on January 2^nd.  Happy Holidays!  Enjoy your break!

This week…

In Math, we will:

·        review 2 and 3 dimensional figures.

·        classify objects into groups.

·        combine shapes to make new ones

·        begin our fraction unit

·        continue to problem-solve daily with our “Problem of the Day”

·       enjoy our “BUILD” math stations… We’ve been focusing on area, odd/even, place value, geometry, and number order. Wow!  The students are also able to use the computers and Promethean boards at this time…

In Language Arts, we will:

·        continue to visualize the story while we read.

·        Revise our how-to’s

·        “fix-up” our writing to publish

·        read poetry to build fluency

·        sort words according to their spelling pattern

·        read word family poems and discuss the rhyming words

·        work with contractions

Social Studies- We will be learning about holidays around the world!
