Week of October 3^rd

This week is Carroll Education Foundation “Change Week”

Make a change in a student’s life by giving change to CEF- ALL change collected during this week will go back to OUES!  CEF will match funds raised up to $1,000!  The class that collects the most change by the end of the week will receive a pizza party. Let’s go First Grade!!!

To celebrate CEF week, students can dress the following ways:

Monday- Pajama Day

Tuesday- Mismatch Sock Day

Wednesday- Crazy Hat Day

Thursday- Circus Day

Friday- Dragon Green Day

 “Read Like a Rock Star”- Please add up the minutes on your child’s paper and return to his/her teacher.  Students will be rewarded based on the number of minutes read.  New reading logs will be sent home Monday.

Report cards will go home Friday.  Please return the signed card along with the envelope ASAP.  Thank you!

This week…

In Math, we will:

·        Create a survey

·        Find and order the area of objects from our desks

·        Collect and sort data to make a real object graph

·        Use whole numbers to describe and compare quantities

·        Create sets of tens and ones to describe, compare, and order whole numbers

In Language Arts, we will:

·        Sketch rather than draw in Writer’s Workshop

·        Tell stories across our fingers to create stories that have a beginning, middle, and end

·        Learn about different strategies to use while reading

·        Learn how pronouns take the place of nouns

·        Sort words according to their spelling pattern

·        Read word family poems and discuss the rhyming words

Social Studies- We will be learning about maps!  We’ll discuss the features of maps, map keys, and cardinal directions.  Kids LOVE maps!

Week of September 26

Wed., Sept. 28- Yogurtland OUES School Night!  Join the first grade teachers from 4:30 to 5:30!  See you there!

Book Fair Time!!!  We will be previewing on Monday.  Below are book fair hours…

Tuesday 7:45-5:30

Wednesday 7:45-3:00

Thursday 7:45-3:00

Friday 7:20-noon.

Reminder… Students that ride the bus must have a bus pass.

Will your child be “player of the day?”  Thanks so much to PTO for purchasing the math program First in Math.  For login information, refer to the inside of your child’s green binder!  We are so proud of the extra time your child is putting into math!  Plus, it’s fun!

This week…

·        Using problem solving to solve a logic problem

·        Collecting and sorting data

·        Creating our “Ten Special Dot” book after reading Ten Black Dots

In Language Arts, we will be:

·        Beginning our “small moment” unit in Writer’s Workshop

·        Learning about different strategies to use while reading

·        Categorizing words by the beginning sounds (c, f, d)

·        Reading word family poems and discussing the rhyming words

Social Studies- We will be learning the Pledge of Allegiance and symbols of America this week!

This week…

In Math, we will be:

·        Counting by 2’s while we draw our family and count the feet

·        Graphing the pets that we have

·        Creating a closed shape with yarn and finding the area

·        Playing “Before and After”- to reinforce number order

In Language Arts, we will be:

·        Revising our writing during Writers’ Workshop

·        Focusing on using our library voice while reading

·        Practicing and reviewing the procedures of our Readers’ Workshop

·        Categorizing words by the beginning sounds (p,t.m)

·        Working  with capitalization

·        Reading word family poems and discussing the rhyming words

Social Studies- We will be learning about safety this week!
